Research
and Reference Support
REFERENCE SERVICES
Reference librarians provide research help to faculty, students,
and staff. You can visit with a librarian at the Information
Desk in the library's North Tower, give us a call, or send
your question by electronic mail.
SUBJECT LIBRARIANS
Each librarian serves as a liaison to faculty and students
in a particular field of study. If you would like to discuss
a particular research question, or if you have questions about
library collections and services in your field of study, please
contact your subject librarian. Subject librarians are also
available to:
- offer course-related library instruction and faculty
development workshops
- provide consultations about library support for new assignments,
courses, or degrees
- provide regular updates on new resources and services
To find your subject librarian, please see our Directory
of Subject Librarians.
BORROWING LIBRARY MATERIALS
Faculty may borrow up to 50 books for one semester with unlimited
renewals. Faculty may also borrow materials from other local
libraries through several reciprocal borrowing programs. For
detailed information about borrowing privileges at the UHD
Library and at other local libraries, please see the following
guides:
INTERLIBRARY LOAN
Do you need materials that are not available at UHD? UHD
faculty, students, and staff can use the library's Interlibrary
Loan service to get those materials delivered to UHD from
other libraries around the country:
REQUESTING MATERIALS FOR PURCHASE
Would you like the library purchase a specific book, database,
journal, or video? Would you like to discuss how library collections
could support a specific assignment, course, or degree program.
Please share your thoughts with your subject librarian. Subject
librarians are also happy to receive copies of course assignments,
syllabi, and degree proposals to help them understand your
teaching needs and priorities.
For more information about library purchases, please contact
Collection Development Librarian.

and Classroom Support
LIBRARY INSTRUCTION
The library offers instruction on library and research skills
at all levels. Librarians work with faculty to tailor a presentation
based on a specific course and include examples that relate
to student topics. Librarians are also available to create
presentations for faculty development workshops, orientations,
summer programs, and other campus events. Instruction usually
takes place in the library instruction room, but it can be
provided in other classrooms, on camera for ITV classes, online
via WebCT, or through visits to distance education sites.
To schedule instruction, contact the Instruction Librarian
by phone or e-mail.
Please allow for preparation by making requests at least
one week in advance (three days for summer).
COURSE RESERVES
Faculty may place materials on reserve in the library for
student use. During the summer and fall semesters, the library
will also be piloting a new electronic reserves service. Please
see the UHD
Library Blog for more details. To place materials
on reserve in the library or online via electronic reserves,
please fill out a reserve request form and bring it to the
Circulation Desk with all reserve materials at least 48 hours
before you would like the items to become available for students.
Extra time is usually required during the first weeks of the
semester. If you would like the library to purchase materials
for use in course reserves, please submit your request at
least six weeks prior to the first class day. Personal copies
are accepted with the understanding that these items are made
available at the owner's risk. Temporary barcodes and labels
will be added to all reserve items. Faculty will be required
to provide evidence of copyright permission.
For questions about the UHD Library Reserves policy or procedures
contact Lisa Carrico, Circulation Librarian at ext. 8936.
If you have questions specifically about electronic documents
or using ERes please contact: 1) Shannon Cunningham, ILL&
Distance Education Librarian (cunninghamsha@uhd.edu;
