Application
You may apply for admission in the following ways:
Official Transcripts
- You must submit official transcripts from all previously attended
colleges or universities regardless of whether you earned any college
credit.
- If you have been to college but have earned less than 15 college-level
credit hours, you must also submit an official high school or GED transcript.
- If you have not been to college at all, you must submit an official
high school or GED transcript.
- A transcript is considered official when it bears the institution's
seal, is signed by the issuing authority, and is sent directly by the
issuing institution or delivered in a sealed envelope.
Citizenship Status Documents
All applicants born outside of the United States must provide one or
more of the following immigration documents in the original.
- I-551
- I-688
- I-94
- US passport
- US citizenship certificate
Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA)
The state-mandated TASP has been replaced with the Texas Success Initiative,
resulting in a new set of rules. Students are still required to take a
test prior to enrolling. Several options are available: Texas
Higher Education Assessment (THEA - formerly known as TASP),
ASSET, COMPASS, or ACCUPLACER. If the scores received do not meet the
college readiness standard, the student will have to retest and comply
with an individualized success plan. See the Texas Higher Education Coordinating
Board's website at www.thecb.state.tx.us
for more information about THEA and valid exemptions.
Freshman Admission
The university strongly recommends that all applicants seeking freshman
admission complete a college-preparatory high school curriculum.
To qualify for freshman admission, an applicant must be a graduate of
an accredited high school or hold a GED high school equivalency and must
have earned fewer than 15 college-level credit hours. Graduates of Texas
public high schools must also have passed the state-mandated high school
exit examination (TAAS).
Placement testing in Reading, Math and English is required of all entering
freshmen. Your test results will determine the level of course you will
take in your first semester. There is no charge for placement testing.
New freshmen are expected to attend an Orientation
session before enrolling in classes. For most freshmen, placement testing
will be done through orientation.
Transfer Student Admission
To apply to UHD as a transfer student, you must have previously earned
15 or more college-level credit hours.
UHD has worked with area community colleges to develop degree articulation
agreements. Students planning to transfer to UH-Downtown are encouraged
to direct their questions about the transferability of their courses to
their community college counselor or to the UHD Office of Admissions and
Records, 713-221-8522. In addition, UHD has prepared Course Equivalencies
to help you determine how many of your courses will transfer.
The State of Texas has developed a set of Common Core Requirements (available
in the Catalog) to ensure transferability of
core courses among institutions in the state. This guarantees that a course
taken at any public college or university that is identified as a state
core course will automatically satisfy the same core requirement at UHD.
Official evaluation of transfer credit is done once you are admitted
to the university. If your evaluation is not done prior to registration,
you should bring copies of your transfer transcripts to your advising
session. If you do not have copies, you may obtain copies from the Office
of Admissions.
Readmission for Former Students
If you have previously attended UHD but were not enrolled during the
preceding long semester, you must be readmitted to the university. Check
with Admission to be certain that there are no holds on your record.
- Complete an Application for
Readmission and submit it to the Office of Admissions.
- Have official transcripts sent from all colleges and universities
you attended since you were last enrolled at UHD.
International Student Admission
International students, or holders of non-immigrant visas, have admission
requirements that differ from those listed here. They include a $60 application
fee, affidavit of support, bank letter and TOEFL scores. See International
Students for more information.
