  • In 1997, with the additional financial support of the CCSDS, the Fourth Year Program was added to Houston PREP. The Fourth Year students worked with Silicon Graphics computers in the Advanced Distributed Simulation Research Computer Lab for their Computer Science course. Additional coursework was Biology, Precalculus, and Physics. In addition to their coursework, Fourth Year students attended the South-Central Computational Science in Minority Institutions Consortium (SC-COSMIC) "Steering Minority Education for the 21st Century" Conference in Duncan Hall at Rice University on June 19, 1998.
  • The Texas Space Grant Consortium and NASA, through the Urban Education Department at UH-D, provided seventeen high school teacher interns to spend a week at Houston PREP. The necessary materials were also provided allowing all First and Second Year PREP students to build model rockets and other space science activities.
  • After a two-week training course on integrating the Internet technologies in the classroom, seven teachers from George I. Sanchez High School interned with PREP participants for four weeks. This internship was made possible by a State of Texas Telecommunication Infrastructure Grant awarded to Sanchez H.S. Houston PREP students were exposed to the use of the Internet in subjects, and some classes developed their own web pages.
  • The 1997 PREP Class was composed of Hispanic (30.4%), African-American (51.3%), and women (60.1%) students who were interested in possible engineering and science professions. The overall Houston PREP population was 93.7% minority and female students.
  • Houston PREP is one of 25 sites of the state-wide TexPREP. The 1997 TexPREP follow up survey of former PREP Scholars showed a 99.9% high school graduation rate. The Survey Results showed 93% are college students or graduates; 65% of these students are engineering or science majors.
