- In 1996, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) preparatory seminars were added to
the third year program. Students took daily quizzes, practiced mathematical
concepts, worked on vocabulary words, and practiced reading comprehension.
Several timed SAT were administered. All students felt both that the seminars
were useful, and made them more confident about taking the SAT in the near
future.
- The 1996 PREP Class was composed of Hispanic (28%), African-American (55%),
and women (69%) students who were interested in possible engineering and science
professions. The overall Houston PREP population was 93.8% minority and female
students.
- Houston PREP is one of 28 sites of the state-wide TexPREP Program. The 1996 TexPREP
follow up survey of former PREP Scholars showed a 99.9% high school graduation
rate. The Survey Results showed 91% are college students or graduates; 57% of the
graduates are engineering or science majors; 75% of the college students are
minorities.
