Organization Description
Project GRAD is a nonprofit K-12 school reform model that is currently underway in ten school districts across the country.The mission of the program is to ensure a quality public education for all children in economically disadvantaged communities to increase high school graduation rates and prepare graduates to be successful in college. America Reads http://www.ed.gov/inits/americareads is a national campaign that was initiated in 1997 that challenges every American to help our children learn to read well and independently by the end of elementary school. Nationwide, there are approximately 1200 colleges and universities participating in the America Reads Challenge. PROJECT GRAD invites Federal Work-Study students, and volunteers to participate in the America Reads/America Counts tutoring program.
Description of Internship
Students will work with elementary, middle school or high school aged children tutoring them in grade specific reading or math skills depending on that childs needs.
Criteria for Interns
Open to all Social Science majors. Work in blocks of not less than 2 hours (excluding travel time); Work a minimum of eight (8) hours per week and no more than (20) hours per week; Have reliable transportation; Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. Students are required to pass a criminal history background check as mandated by HISD. Interns must have proficient elementary level reading and math skills.
