Organization Description
The goal of all Lighthouse programs is to provide opportunities for the blind and visually impaired to appraise their interests, capabilities and attitudes so that they will be empowered through rehabilitation, to participate in a variety of rewarding educational, vocational and leisure activities. The Lighthouse aims to enhance the welfare and well being of the blind and visually impaired by equipping them with skills they need to function in a sighted world by broadening public understanding and fostering acceptance. The Lighthouse of Houston is a private, non-profit organization and a charter member of the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast.

Description of Internship
The volunteers will assist the adult clients enrolled in our Multi-Care Adult Day Care program in physical recreation classes, group activities, community outings and skill development classes offered by Certified Recreational Therapists for the purpose of stimulating cognitive and social functioning as well as reinforcing daily living skills. The recreation classes offered include ceramics, cooking, cardio exercises, games and field trips. The majority of the clients are blind or visually impaired with a secondary disability such as Diabetes and/or cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. The program is Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The volunteers will participate in our Telephone Reassurance program by calling homebound seniors to determine well-being and to provide a connection to the sighted world. The volunteers will assist with client surveys in our community outreach program serving the elderly blind/visually impaired clients who receive services from our agency.

Criteria for Interns
Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation and complete a criminal background check. All majors are welcomed.
