Organization Description

The mission of JCHH is to enhance the quality of life in Houston’s Fifth Ward and its surrounding communities through programs and services to promote self-empowerment. Our vision is “community empowerment through collaboration, education, and support services. Hester House’s services to the community have always included the homeless, youth, adults and senior citizens.


Description of Internship

The intern would have an opportunity to work in one of three program areas. The duties could entail case management or program duties.

  • Youth Services: Serves youth ages 13 to 17 in developing character building, team building and leadership skills development. Youth participate in recreational, educational, and enrichment activities promoting leadership and upward mobility.
  • Senior Services: Offers social interaction, recreational activities, and nutrition services to seniors to promote independent; living. Seniors participate in group activities, exercise, community service projects, arts & crafts, field trips and health education seminars.
  • Family Services: Seeks to provide emergency assistance to individuals and families in crisis. Services include rent and mortgage assistance, bag of groceries and clothing. JCHH also assesses client needs and develop a plan of action to promote self-sufficiency.

  • Criteria for Interns

    1. A High School Diploma. At least one year of college coursework in social work or related field.
    2. Customer service experience preferred.
    3. Ability to handle multiple tasks. Ability to perform several tasks concurrently, time management and organizational skills.
    4. A demonstrated ability to persevere though periods of heavy workload and stressful situations.
    5. Ability to research and analyze data.
    6. Familiarity and skills using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Publisher
