South Park Mexican, Chingo Bling, and the Commodity Fetish in Houston Chicano Hip Hop

A Lecture by Marco Cervantes M.A., University of Texas at San Antonio B.A., University of Houston - Downtown

Wednesday, November 5, 1:00 p.m.-2:15 p.m.
Robertson Auditorium, 3rd fl. Academic Building

Cervantes will discuss the music and material culture of rappers South Park Mexican and Chingo Bling and explain how both artists managed to transcend the grip of corporate industry control, break into the mainstream, and create scattered communities globally.
Questions he'll consider:

  • Do South Park Mexican and Chingo Bling enforce limited depictions of Blacks and Chicanos in Houston?
  • In such a diversified city, why aren't there more varied representations of Houston hip hop in mainstream media?
